Imran took ‘unhappy’ sisters into confidence before divorce

LAHORE: Pakistan Tehreek-e-Insaf chairman Imran Khan had assured his sisters, who were quite unhappy over his wedding with Reham Khan, that he was going to part ways with his wife, ending a 10-month old relation, Samaa reported Friday.

Our correspondent says Imran visited his sisters in Lahore on Thursday taking them into confidence about the move he was going to make.

According to reports, the second marriage of Khan seemed to be on the rocks since beginning, as sisters of the 63-year-old politician and two sons were said to be unhappy over the wedding.

The marriage of former cricket hero collapsed merely ten months after he tied the knot with BBC anchor Reham Khan in January this year.

The decision comes a day before first phase of local government elections in Punjab and Sindh, with PTI office-bearers considering political implications of Khan’s decision.

The news of separation became a top twitter trend in Pakistan.

In September, a cousin of Reham Khan accused Imran’s former wife, Jemima Golsmith, of being behind the stories that were appearing against Reham in the media, an allegation the PTI chairman himself rejected.

His new bride, a divorcee and mother of two, was embroiled in couple of controversies during the last ten months that according to political commentators might have caused the marriage to collapse.

Reham had to face criticism at home after a foreign media report raised questions over authenticity of her journalism degree she acquired from a UK-based college during her stay in Britain.

In an interview, Dr Rehman, ex-husband, also criticized Reham, claiming that she had forced him to leave his house only with a suitcase.

Reham frequently appeared in PTI rallies, drawing strong criticism from Imran’s political rivals as well as his own comrades, forcing the former cricket legend to announced that she would not play political role anymore.

In August, he publically announced that Reham would not attend PTI rallies after she was harshly criticized following party’s defeat in by-polls in NA-19 in Khyber Pakhtunkhwa at the hands of Pakistan Muslim League-Nawaz candidate.

This seemed to be end of Reham’s political career which many political analysts said might have deepened differences between the couple. – Samaa
