WASHINGTON: Chief of the Army Staff, General Raheel Sharif, met US Vice President Joe Biden at the White House and discussed matters relating to bilateral relations and regional issues.
General Raheel Sharif is currently in Washington on a five-day official visit during which he met top officials of the State and Defense Department including Secretary John Kerry and Secretary Defense Ash Carter.
On Thursday, the Army Chief also met Chairman Richard Burr and Vice Chairman Dianne Feinstein of the US Senate Committee on Intelligence and discussed matters relating to regional issues and counter-terrorism.
The US Senators lauded the anti-terrorism strategy of Pakistan saying that the country has forced terrorists on the back foot and has turned the tide of terrorism.
The Senators “noted Pakistan Army’s perseverance and commitment” which had degraded militant networks in Pakistan, Director General, ISPR, Lt Gen Asim Bajawa said of the meeting.
“Leadership of the Intelligence Committee acknowledged that Pakistan has turned the tide of terrorism and assured the COAS of US support and cooperation in eradicating terrorism and extremism,” he said.
General Rasheel Sharif emphasized that terrorism was a global threat and warrants coordinated global response.
The Army Chief also met the Senate Armed Services Committee at the Capitol Hill on Thursday. Chairman of the Committee, Senator John McCain received the Army Chief.
Senator Jack Reed and other senior Senators were also present.
With clear regional security perspective, the COAS highlighted the need for stepped-up Pak-Afghan border management and sustained cooperation to deal with emerging threats.
Senator McCain appreciated efforts and sacrifices of the armed forces under the leadership of General Raheel Sharif in fighting terrorists.
While lauding the longstanding defense cooperation between Pakistan and the United States, Senator McCain emphasized the need to further reinforce this partnership in view of the emerging developments. – Samaa
