LG polls: PML-N takes lead in Punjab, PPP in Sindh

KARACHI/LAHORE: Pakistan Muslim League-Nawaz (PML-N) and Pakistan Peoples Party (PPP) emerged as leading political parties in the second phase of the Local Government (LG) elections held on Thursday in 12 districts of Punjab and 14 of Sindh respectively.


Samaa has so far obtained unofficial results of 2018 out of 2399 municipal seats of Punjab and 1196 out of 1833 seats of Sindh.


– Punjab –


According to unofficial, unconfirmed and preliminary results, PML-N clinched 929 seats, followed by 746 of independent candidates, 300 of Pakistan Tehreek-e-Insaf (PTI), 12 of PPP, 8 of Jamaat-e-Islami and rest of seats by other parties.


In Punjab, the independent candidates have emerged as the main opposition, as PTI secured third spot, a similar status it had acquired in the Phase-I of the LG Polls 2015.


The results are still pouring in since Thursday evening.


– Sindh –


PPP secured majority of municipal seats amid a setback in Badin district.


According to unofficial results, PPP grabbed 844 seats, followed by 118 each of MQM and independent candidates, 63 of PML-N, 22 of PML-F, 17 of Awami Ittehad and seven of PTI.


Pakistan People’s Party Shaheed Bhutto Group secured four seats while JUI-F won just three seats.


Candidates supported by disgruntled PPP leader, Zulfikar Mirza, upset PPP in district Badin, getting 31 seats and PPP just managed to get five seats.


– MQM returns –


MQM won most of the seats in Hyderabad and Mirpurkhas. In Hyderabad, the party won seats of chairmen and vice chairmen from 61 Union Committees (UCs) out of 96 UCs in the Hyderabad Municipal Corporation (HMC).


In Mirpurkhas, the party secured 29 out of 47 seats of Municipal Committee Mirpurkhas, PPP stood second by getting 9 seats.


The initial results showed that PML-N and PPP not only maintained but further strengthened their lead they got in first phase of the LG polls held on October 31 in 12 districts of Punjab and eight districts of Sindh.


PML-N had been given mandate of 1,199 seats of chairmen, vice chairmen and wards of municipal committees in Punjab, while in Sindh, PPP secured 720 seats in the first phase of local government polls.


Contrary to the first phase, the entire exercise of the polling day during the second phase of LG polls remained remarkably peaceful and well-organized.


In Punjab, polling was held in Sargodha, Gujranwala, Sahiwal, Attock, Jhelum, Mianwali, Chiniot, Toba Tek Singh, Hafizabad, Mandi Bahauddin, Sheikhupura and Khanewal.


In Sindh, polling was held in Hyderabad, Tando Muhammad Khan, Tando Allayar, Matiari, Dadu, Jamshoro, Badin, Thatta, Sajawal, Shaheed Benazirabad, Nausharoferoz, Mirpurkhas, Umerkot and Tharparkhar.


Chief Election Commissioner (CEC) Justice (retd) Sardar Muhammad Raza has commended the role of Army, Rangers and election staff in successful and peaceful holding of second phase of LG elections. – Samaa/APP
