KARACHI: The control room of Election Commission continued monitoring the polling process in the second phase of Local Government elections on Thursday and received a total of 106 complaints from Sindh and Punjab.

Meantime, the ECP snubbed the allegations leveled by political parties that it had delayed the elections in different Union Councils of Sindh to favor certain political party.

The commission received 59 complaints from Punjab and 47 from Sindh.

The complaint centre constituted at the Provincial Election Commission (PEC) Sindh office here received more than 47 complaints with regard to alleged discrepancies during the second phase of local government polls in the province on Thursday.

Incharge PEC Sindh Complaint Cell, Imran Ahmed, sharing details with APP said that no complaint was received from any of the polling stations located in Tando Allahyar and Matiari districts throughout the day.

Highest number of complaints was reported from Hyderabad and Thar, he said mentioning that most of these were about delay in start of polling process despite presence of sizable number of voters on the designated stations.

The complaint centre official said polling was also stopped in three of the polling stations in Tharparkar due to non-arrival of concerned presiding officers.

These were in Kharo Soomro, Ghanay di Veiri and Bhojro where process was suspended and re-polling was decided to be conducted in coming days, said Imran Ahmed.

He also mentioned that one of the voters in Thatta was found in possession of two NICs that were got immediately blocked through timely intimation to NADRA. “The man was also disallowed to cast his vote,” said the official.

In reply to a question, he said complaints were being received through phone and fax service at the PEC office, Karachi.

ECP Addresses Grievances On Poll Delay
The ECP also refuted criticism of some politicians that a day before the poll election had been postponed to favour, or to facilitate the candidates of any political party.

“The Commission denies the allegations and clarifies that High Court of Sindh passed an order on November 17, giving direction that the Election Commission would issue the revised lists keeping in view the instruction of the order/judgment on September 18, within 24 hours of this order, in such manner that the election process, which is scheduled for November 19, would not suffer and the elections be held as per the schedule,” said the spokesman.

The statement comes hours after Pakistan People’s Party (PPP) Co-Chairman, Asif Ali Zardari lashed out at the ECP for last-minute postponement of local bodies’ elections in Sindh.

He said that the matter was discussed in the Election Commission on the report submitted by the Provincial Election Commissioner Sindh that it is practically impossible to revise the list of constituencies within 24 hours and to hold polling on November 19.

The delimitation exercise requires sufficient time and is subject to the demarcation of urban and rural areas by the Provincial Government and issuance of notification in this regard. APP/ SAMAA
