SWAT: Chairman National Disaster Management Authority, Lieutenant General (R), Nawaz Asghar has said that the payment of compensation to earthquake affected people of Khyber Pakhtunkhwa would start from November 2.


Addressing a joint press conference along with Commissioner Malakand Division, Usman Gul here, he said that on spot payments would be made to affected people through public representatives, government officers and officials of various major banks.


He said that 1250 teams comprising officials of Pakistan Army, district administration and public representatives of seven districts of the division and Bajaur Agency are conducting a comprehensive survey to assess the losses incurred by devastating October 26 earthquake.


In the light of the assessment reports of survey teams about fully and partially damaged houses, the payment would be made accordingly, he added.


Giving initial details of damages caused by earthquake in Malakand Division, he said at least 30219 houses and buildings were fully and partially damaged resulting in killing of 195 persons and injuring 1428 others.


Following the directives of federal and provincial governments, the payments of compensation to affected families would be made without any delay and the process would be completed with a period of 7-10 days, he informed.


Meanwhile Commissioner Malakand told the media that emergency control rooms were immediately setup in all districts after the earthquake and all deputy commissioners and political agent of Bajaur Agency was directed to monitor the rescue and relief activities.


He said that health officials including doctors were asked to report in hospitals and provide free medicines and treatment to the quake affectees.


The commissioner told media that 46 relief centers have been established across the division in collaboration of civil administration and Pakistan Army adding that so far 3277 non-food items 5550 edibles items, 6796 tents and 9179 blankets have been distributed among the affectees.


He said that Rs. 3 billion has been handed over to deputy commissioner concerned for payment of compensation amount to bereaved families and injured. He advised the affected people to register their complaint in the relief centre of their area if the survey teams could not reach them. – APP
